Relevance, resilience, relationships

Sunyau Expo general manager, Peck Sik Juan, explains how the stand-building company embraced change by encouraging cross-departmental collaboration.

Sunyau Expo provides turnkey solutions in stand building, event support, interior decoration and pop up stalls in Singapore and across Southeast Asia. However, since the outbreak of Covid-19 in February, we have not executed a single major project and our revenue dropped tremendously by almost 95 per cent.

Facing almost close to zero revenue due to the increasing number of cancelled or postponed shows, we felt a real urgent need to think ahead and reformulate our business to tackle the situation.

A framework consisting of how we can still be relevant during and after this pandemic was drafted, focusing on various aspects of the business such as Covid-19 crisis management, redevelopment and training, and business continuity and development.

In this uncertain and ever-changing situation, we also see the need for swift and more direct responses to market change. To prepare ourselves for future opportunities, we formed a special working group with members from each department. This enabled cross-departmental communication and helped to share knowledge and expertise to push out effective plans. This included the development and launch of our Protective Solutions concept in early June.

Since the outbreak, customer enquiries have shifted to Covid-19 crisis management, like safe distancing solutions and studio build-up for virtual events. Many of our clients now include facility managers and corporate offices, who like the fact that these solutions are simple and easy to install, movable and modular and most importantly, cost effective.

As a business, in order to emerge stronger from Covid-19, we have focused on three key areas:

Relevance

In times like this, Sunyau Expo has been forced to reinvent the business for survival. Usually, our attention is focused on current business needs and we are reluctant to respond to trends in the market. Moving forward, however, I believe there will be a strong need to build a team that is forward thinking and can constantly identify market trends to stay relevant to the industry.

Resilience

The company has benefited from many years of prudence and risk-calculated investment, which has proved to be a factor in surviving the current crisis.

Relationships

Being a family-owned company of more than 20 years, nothing is more valuable than building a long-serving team — this has also proved crucial in combatting Covid-19. Throughout 2020, I’ve seen many initiatives from various departments and various task groups all focused on keeping the company afloat.

Never before have I felt such strong team bonds and I believe that in times of uncertainty, people are the key to business survival.
